NATIONALITY AS A MYTH FOR THE DOMESTIC CONSUMPTION OF POLES AND RUSSIANS de Lazari Andrzej University of Lodz, Lodz, Republic of Poland alazari@toya.net.pl Abstract.
The article is devoted to the discussion of the problem of the discrepancy between the concepts and categories of different cultures, when, defining the terms, we use the meanings that are fixed in our of the culture differently than in the culture being studied. The article focuses on the concept of “the People”. The author questions how accurately this concept can be translated into the languages of other cultures, and whether people think about the same categories when they hear this term. The article compares different understandings of this term in the USA (“the People”), Poland (“Naród”) and Russia (“Народ”). The author argues that the understanding of the category “the People” in these three cases is fundamentally different, which is determined by the underlying ideas, and history. The article analyzes the category of “the People” from the point of view of the concepts of collectivism and individualism, as well as the categories “We” and “I”, which form the concept of “the People”. The author reveals the difference between Russian solidarity and the Western idea of solidarity. The article analyzes history of the concept of “the People” in the history of Russia and Russian thought, as well as modern understanding of nationality in Russia and in Poland. Keywords: nationality, myth, concepts, Russia, Poland.
